Does a Glass Claim Affect Your SGI Rates

Does a Glass Claim Affect Your SGI Rates?

Short answer: no. A glass claim for road hazard damage β€” a rock chip, a crack from gravel, debris kicked up on the Ring Road β€” does not affect your SGI safety rating, your premiums, or your driving record.

It’s the question we hear most at Mike’s Auto Glass, and it’s the reason so many Regina drivers pay full price for glass their insurance would have covered. Here’s how SGI’s rating system actually works, and why a cracked windshield isn’t part of it.

What SGI looks at when it sets your rates

SGI sets your premiums through its Safe Driver Recognition (SDR) program. Your safety rating moves up when you drive without incidents and down when something negative lands on your record.

Only two things count as negative:

  • At-fault collisions, where you’re found responsible for a crash
  • Traffic convictions, such as speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, or running a red light

Glass damage from the road is neither. Nothing else moves your rating down.

Why a cracked windshield isn’t held against you

A rock that hits your windshield on Highway 1 is a road hazard. You didn’t cause it and you couldn’t have avoided it. It isn’t a collision and it isn’t a violation.

When we file a road hazard glass claim for you, it doesn’t show up as a negative event on your record. Your safety rating stays exactly where it was. That holds for:

Vandalism and break-ins

If someone smashes a window, that isn’t your fault either, so it doesn’t count against your rating. The process can look a little different: for back glass and some side glass, SGI asks you to open the claim yourself first, and a break-in may need a police report. Your rates still aren’t affected.

Does filing more than one claim hurt?

No. Each road hazard claim is assessed on its own and stays non-at-fault, no matter how many you make. If you pick up three chips in a year and fix all three under your package policy, your rates don’t move.

What skipping the claim really costs

Here’s what a windshield looks like for a driver with an SGI package policy:

Paying out of pocketUsing your package policy
Standard windshield$350–$700$50–$100 deductible
2018+ vehicle with ADAS calibration$550–$1,400+$50–$100 deductible
Effect on your SGI ratesβ€”None

Chips are an even bigger miss. Package-policy holders get up to three free chip repairs a year with no deductible. Left alone, a chip can spread into a crack, and a free repair becomes a full replacement.

Want to double-check?

You don’t have to take our word for it. SGI’s own Safe Driver Recognition information lists only at-fault collisions and traffic convictions. You can also ask SGI or your insurance broker how your rating is calculated.

The bottom line

SGI’s rating system is built to flag risky driving, not bad luck on the highway. A rock in your windshield is bad luck, and claiming it is simply using the coverage you already pay for.
