What to Do When Your Windshield Cracks in Saskatchewan
A gravel truck passes you on Highway 1, there’s a crack, and now there’s a line spreading across your glass. A cracked windshield in Saskatchewan raises the same questions for everyone: What will this cost? Do I call SGI? Will my insurance go up? Can I keep driving?
Here’s what to do, in order.
Step 1: Look at the damage
When it’s safe, pull over and take a look. The size and spot tell you a lot:
| What you see | What it usually needs |
|---|---|
| A chip smaller than a loonie | A quick repair, free with an SGI package policy |
| A crack under about 15 cm (6 inches), away from your view and the edges | Possibly a repair; have it checked |
| A long crack, spider-web damage, or a crack reaching the edge | A full windshield replacement |
If the crack runs through your line of sight, read whether it’s legal to drive on.
Step 2: Take a photo
Get a clear picture on your phone before anything else. It lets the shop assess the damage remotely, and for back or door glass, SGI may ask for photos.
Step 3: Note the date
Every SGI glass claim needs a date of loss: the day the damage happened. If you only noticed it later, a best guess is fine. Don’t sit on it, though. Cracks spread fast in our climate.
Step 4: Don’t call SGI (for a windshield)
This surprises most people. For windshield damage and stone chips, you don’t call SGI, you don’t use eClaim, and you don’t need a claim number. The glass shop does it all: confirms your coverage, opens the claim, and bills SGI directly.
The exception: back glass, and sometimes door glass. For those, SGI usually wants you to open the claim yourself first. We’ll walk you through it.
Step 5: Call a glass shop
Call Mike’s Auto Glass at (306) 543-2299, or text us the photo from Step 2. Tell us your vehicle and what happened. We’ll:
- Tell you whether it’s a repair or a replacement
- Check your SGI coverage and exact deductible
- Book you in, often for the same day
Keep your registration handy. It has the customer number and plate number we need.
Step 6: Get it fixed
Bring your vehicle in, or drop it off the night before using our key drop. You pay only your deductible, as little as $50 with a package policy. We do the work, file the claim, and most windshields are done the same day.
What not to do
- Don’t ignore it. Freeze-thaw cycles can turn a repairable chip into a long crack within days.
- Don’t reach for a hardware-store repair kit. They rarely last, and a failed DIY job can rule out a proper repair.
- Don’t assume it’ll be expensive. With a package policy, a replacement is $50β$100 and chip repairs are free.
- Don’t skip the claim over your rates. Road hazard glass claims don’t affect your SGI rates.
