SGI Package Policy vs Standard Plates: What’s Covered for Auto Glass

Every vehicle registered in Saskatchewan has glass coverage through SGI. What you pay when your windshield cracks depends on which kind: an SGI package policy usually means a $50–$100 deductible, while standard plate coverage means $700. On the same windshield, that gap can be several hundred dollars.

Here’s how each one works, and how to tell which you have.

Standard plate coverage: what every vehicle gets

Standard coverage comes automatically with your registration. You don’t buy it separately.

For glass, it carries a $700 deductible. You pay the first $700 of the job and SGI pays anything above that.

  • When it helps: newer vehicles (2018+) that need ADAS camera calibration after a windshield replacement. The total often runs past $700, so a claim still saves you money.
  • When it doesn’t: door glass, quarter glass, and windshields on older vehicles often cost less than $700. Paying directly is usually simpler and cheaper.

SGI package policy (Auto Pak): the extra layer

A package policy is extra coverage you buy through an insurance broker, on top of your plates. You’ll sometimes see it called Auto Pak, and it comes in tiers with different deductibles.

For glass, a package policy typically gives you:

  • A glass deductible of $50 or $100 instead of $700
  • Up to 3 free stone chip repairs a year, with no deductible
  • The same easy process: the shop files with SGI and bills them directly
  • No effect on your safety rating or premiums, same as any road hazard glass claim

What it looks like on a real windshield

Take a 2021 Ford F-150 with a lane-keeping camera. Say the windshield plus ADAS calibration comes to $900.

How you payYou paySGI pays
Out of pocket, no claim$900$0
Standard plates ($700 deductible)$700$200
Package policy ($100 deductible)$100$800

For a stone chip, the difference is simpler. On standard plates, chips aren’t worth claiming, so you pay cash. With a package policy, the repair is free.

How to find out which one you have

  • Check your insurance papers for the words “package policy,” “Auto Pak,” or “glass deductible.”
  • Ask your broker. They can tell you your exact glass deductible.
  • Ask us. With your plate number and registration, we can look up your coverage in minutes, for free.

Is a package policy worth adding?

If you drive Saskatchewan highways regularly, rock chips aren’t a matter of if but when. One cash windshield costs $350–$700, or more with calibration. Adding road hazard glass coverage to a package policy often costs less over a year than a single out-of-pocket repair.

Your broker can price it for you. For most Regina drivers, it’s one of the most practical add-ons there is.

The bottom line

Both types of coverage include auto glass, and the claim process is identical. The only difference is your deductible: $700 on standard plates, or as little as $50 with an SGI package policy.
